Verified By Visa
What is the Verified by Visa service?
Verified by Visa is a service designed to ensure you are protected while shopping online with your Visa card.
How does Verified by Visa work?
As you make a purchase online, PCU assesses the risk of the transaction based on a number of factors. In some instances, you may be asked to confirm some personal details (date of birth, mother’s maiden name, address details) so PCU can be sure the card isn’t being used without your permission.
Will I need to apply for a new card to use Verified by Visa?
No. We will register your card for Verified by Visa on your behalf, so you’ll automatically be protected.
Will I require a username and password for the Verified by Visa service?
Protection the Verified by Visa way is simple because you don’t have to remember usernames and passwords – you will be automatically registered and protected. If your card is new, PCU will register the card before we issue it to you. With existing cards, PCU will take care of registering it as part of the Verified by Visa service.
Why would I be asked to confirm personal details and is this safe?
Each time you make an online purchase, PCU assesses the risk level of the transaction – certain activity may seem out of the ordinary, maybe because it’s a high dollar value, or a retailer you’ve never bought with before. If PCU is concerned a transaction may be fraudulent, you will be prompted to confirm your identity, and you will be requested to enter some personal details unique to your account with us.
If the transaction is considered high risk, you may be required to confirm several details before the transaction is approved.
Will my account be billed for Verified by Visa purchases?
Your Verified by Visa purchases will appear as normal purchases on your statement, under the name of the ‘merchant’ – that is, the company from which you made your purchase.
How much does Verified by Visa cost?
This additional security benefit is provided to you free of charge.
What browser do I need to use for Verified by Visa?
Verified by Visa requires Microsoft Internet Explorer version 5.5 and above, Netscape Navigator 7.1 and above, or America Online 9.
Can I use Verified by Visa from any computer?
Yes, you can use Verified by Visa from any computer connected to the internet, with a compatible browser, as outlined above.
Visa Chip Cards
What is a chip card?
A chip card is a credit or debit card with an embedded smart chip. It appears as a gold or silver square on the left hand side of the card. Like the magnetic stripe on the back of current credit and debit cards, the embedded microchip securely stores your account details – their account name, number and account expiry date.
Why the change to chip cards?
The microchip has been developed in a joint venture between leading card providers to provide a new global standard in card security.
Unlike the magnetic stripe on the back of cards used until now, the microchip is virtually impossible to copy, providing an unrivaled level of protection against counterfeiting, card skimming and other fraudulent use.
Do chip card transactions work the same way?
No, it’s a little bit different. On chip enabled POS terminals, instead of swiping their card, cardholders will soon be asked to insert their card into the chip terminal. The Member’s card remains in the terminal throughout the transaction and confirms their identity by requesting their PIN. Once the PIN is confirmed and the transaction has been processed, the customer will be prompted to remove their card from the terminal.
Are merchants ready for the new technology?
Australian merchants are using chip enabled POS terminals, with the remaining business owners currently in the process of making the change to new chip terminals. In the meantime, merchant terminals remain fully compatible with both chip and magnetic stripe cards.
Can I still use magnetic stripe cards?
Yes, magnetic stripe cards can still be used in all payment terminals in Australia and cardholders can either sign or use their PIN to authorise the transaction.
Can the cards still be used at ATMs?
Yes. All Visa cards can still be used at ATMs in the same way they are currently used.
Will I need a new PIN?
No. When the new chip cards are issued, they will be linked to the Member’s original PIN.
If I have forgotten their PIN or would like to change it, can I request a new one?
Yes. You can change your PIN at any of our Branches.
What about travelling overseas?
Chip technology is already in use in many countries around the world so if you are travelling overseas they need to memorise and use your PIN as this is the preferred, safer option for you and most merchants.
Can the new cards be used for online shopping?
Yes, of course. It’s still important to remember to use your card with some caution when shopping online. You should only shop on secure and reputable websites and take advantage of initiatives such as Verified by Visa to protect your card details.
